A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is legally eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election, dismissing attempts to bar him from seeking another term in office. The judgment was delivered on Tuesday by Justice Peter Lifu following a suit filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who asked the court to restrain Jonathan from contesting under any political party. 
The plaintiff had argued that Jonathan was constitutionally ineligible to run again because he had previously completed the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before later winning the 2011 presidential election. However, Justice Lifu ruled that there was no constitutional barrier preventing Jonathan from participating in the 2027 race, noting that the issue had already been addressed in earlier judgments delivered by courts in Yenagoa and at the Court of Appeal. The judge reportedly held that Jonathan had only been elected president once and therefore remained qualified under the Nigerian Constitution. 
The ruling has immediately reignited political speculation over Jonathan’s future plans ahead of the 2027 elections, although the former president has not publicly declared any intention to contest. Jonathan has repeatedly remained silent on calls from supporters urging him to return to active politics, while his wife, Patience Jonathan, recently suggested that he was unlikely to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle. Despite that, several political groups and opposition stakeholders have continued mentioning his name as a possible consensus candidate capable of uniting different political blocs across the country. 
The judgment comes at a time of intense political activity across Nigeria, with major parties already conducting primaries and coalition talks ahead of 2027. Opposition movements involving figures such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi have continued reshaping the political landscape, while President Tinubu recently secured victories in APC presidential primaries held in several states nationwide. Analysts believe the court ruling could further complicate opposition calculations if Jonathan eventually decides to re-enter the presidential race, given his continued influence across both the North and South as a former president widely viewed as a moderate political figure.
