The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a chef, John Cosmos Govi, over his alleged involvement in the drugging of residents and the theft of luxury items valued at about ₦150 million from a residence in Abuja. The suspect was apprehended following an investigation launched after victims reported the disappearance of expensive valuables from their home under suspicious circumstances.
According to police authorities, Govi allegedly gained access to the residence through his role as a chef before secretly drugging occupants of the house. Investigators said the victims later became unconscious, allowing the suspect and his alleged accomplices to cart away luxury wristwatches, jewellery, foreign currencies, expensive gadgets, and other high-value household items. Police operatives reportedly tracked the suspect after intelligence gathering and digital tracing linked him to the crime.
The Force Public Relations Department disclosed that several stolen items have already been recovered while efforts continue to arrest other suspects connected to the operation. Preliminary investigations also revealed that the suspect allegedly belonged to a wider criminal network specialising in drugging victims before carrying out targeted robberies in Abuja and surrounding areas. Police authorities said the case highlights growing concerns over insider-assisted crimes involving domestic workers, service providers, and temporary staff employed in private residences.
The incident has sparked fresh security concerns among residents of the Federal Capital Territory, especially regarding the vetting of domestic employees and hospitality workers. Security experts have advised homeowners to conduct proper background checks before hiring staff and to remain cautious about granting unrestricted access to private residences. The latest arrest also adds to a series of recent police crackdowns on organised theft, kidnapping, and fraud syndicates across different parts of Nigeria as security agencies intensify operations against rising criminal activities nationwide.
