Former Inspector-General of Police Mohammed Adamu has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress following his defeat in the Nasarawa State governorship primary election ahead of the 2027 polls. Adamu announced his resignation in a letter submitted on Monday to APC executives in Makama Ward, Lafia, stating that recent developments within the party made it impossible for him to continue pursuing his political ambitions under the APC platform.
In the resignation letter, the former police chief said the conduct of the APC governorship primary in Nasarawa State eroded his confidence in the party’s leadership and internal democratic processes. According to him, principles such as fairness, transparency, equal opportunity, and internal democracy were not reflected during the exercise. Adamu explained that after consultations with political associates, supporters, and family members, he decided to withdraw his membership and explore another political platform for his governorship ambition.
Before the primary election, Adamu had strongly opposed attempts to produce a consensus candidate within the Nasarawa APC and openly challenged the endorsement of Senator Ahmed Wadada by Governor Abdullahi Sule and some party leaders. His campaign team repeatedly insisted that only a free and credible primary could determine the party’s candidate. The former IGP had earlier purchased APC nomination forms and expressed confidence that he could defeat Wadada despite the backing of influential stakeholders within the state chapter of the party.
Adamu’s resignation represents another major political shake-up within the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, especially in Nasarawa State where internal disagreements over endorsements and consensus arrangements have continued to generate controversy. Political analysts believe his next political move could reshape alliances in the state, particularly because of his influence among security veterans, northern political blocs, and grassroots supporters built during his years in public service. His exit also adds to the growing list of politicians reconsidering their positions within major parties as preparations for the next general elections intensify nationwide.
