Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged victorious in the African Democratic Congress presidential primary election held in Sokoto State, recording an overwhelming win ahead of the party’s national presidential contest for the 2027 elections. Results announced on Monday showed Atiku defeating his rivals by a massive margin after polling 68,823 votes across the state’s 23 local government areas.
The result was declared at the ADC state secretariat in Sokoto by the chairman of the presidential primary election committee, Professor Aminu Abubakar, who described the exercise as peaceful, transparent, and credible. According to the official figures, a total of over 69,000 votes were cast during the exercise, while former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi secured 292 votes and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen polled 319 votes.
Several influential ADC leaders and stakeholders attended the declaration of results, including former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, governorship candidate Manir Dan’Iya, party executives, senatorial aspirants, and delegates from across the state. Supporters at the venue reportedly celebrated the outcome with chants and solidarity songs, expressing confidence that Atiku remains the strongest opposition figure capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the APC in 2027.
The Sokoto result further strengthens Atiku’s dominance within the ADC following his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party as part of a broader opposition coalition movement. Political observers say the former vice president continues to command significant influence in Northern Nigeria despite repeated presidential defeats in previous election cycles. The latest victory also comes amid growing coalition talks involving major opposition figures, including Peter Obi and other politicians seeking to build a united front against the ruling APC ahead of the next general election.
