Fresh political controversy has erupted in Kano State after the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sunusi Tofa, alleged that former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is indirectly working toward the re-election of President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections. Tofa made the claim during an appearance on Arise News while reacting to ongoing political alignments and coalition discussions ahead of the next election cycle. 
According to Tofa, recent political developments involving Kwankwaso and his allies suggest a hidden alignment with the ruling APC despite public criticism of the Tinubu administration by opposition figures. The aide argued that some of Kwankwaso’s political moves and negotiations were weakening opposition unity at a time when several parties were exploring possible coalitions to challenge the APC in 2027. The comments have intensified speculation surrounding Kwankwaso’s future political direction following his recent departure from the New Nigeria Peoples Party and reported links with emerging opposition alliances. 
Kwankwaso remains one of Nigeria’s most influential northern politicians and continues to command a large grassroots following through the Kwankwasiyya movement, especially in Kano State. His political structure was widely credited with helping Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf secure victory in the 2023 Kano governorship election under the NNPP platform. However, recent political shifts in Kano, including changes within the state government and internal disagreements among key figures, have fuelled rumours of possible realignments involving both APC and opposition camps. 
The allegation comes at a time when political activities ahead of the 2027 elections are already intensifying across the country. Several opposition figures have continued discussions around possible alliances aimed at unseating the APC, while the ruling party has simultaneously strengthened support for President Tinubu’s second-term bid. Analysts say Kwankwaso’s next political decision could significantly influence voting patterns across Northern Nigeria, particularly in Kano, which remains one of the country’s most politically strategic states.
