Former Nigerian Head of State General Yakubu Gowon has reaffirmed his unwavering belief in the unity and survival of Nigeria, declaring that his love for the country “is beyond question” despite the nation’s political, economic, and security difficulties. Gowon made the remarks on Tuesday in Abuja during the public presentation of his autobiography titled My Life of Duty & Allegiance, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre. 
The former military ruler said his commitment to the Nigerian project remained absolute decades after leading the country through the Nigerian Civil War between 1967 and 1970. According to him, the autobiography was written partly to preserve history and correct misconceptions surrounding his role during one of Nigeria’s most turbulent periods. Gowon explained that he did not write the book to attack anyone or reopen old wounds, but rather to contribute to national memory and help younger generations better understand Nigeria’s journey. 
During his speech, Gowon also warned politicians against divisive politics and desperation ahead of the 2027 general elections. He cautioned political actors against embracing “do-or-die” politics capable of threatening national stability and unity, stressing that Nigeria’s diversity should remain a source of strength rather than conflict. The elder statesman expressed confidence that the country would overcome its present challenges just as it survived previous national crises during and after the civil war era. 
Gowon, who ruled Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, remains one of the country’s most influential historical figures because of his role during the civil war and his post-war reconciliation policy famously described as “No Victor, No Vanquished.” Over the years, he has continued advocating peace, national integration, and interfaith harmony through various initiatives including the Nigeria Prays movement. His latest comments come at a time of heightened political activity, worsening economic hardship, and increasing security concerns across different parts of the country ahead of the next election cycle.
