The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed that the suspected gas leak incident reported in parts of Ijebu-Ode on Friday has been successfully contained, assuring residents that the situation is now under control and no longer poses immediate danger to the public. 
According to the police, the incident occurred along the Agoro/Okunowa Road axis of Ijebu-Ode and triggered an emergency response after reports emerged of a strange chemical emission affecting students and residents in nearby communities. Tactical teams from the Obalende Division, alongside environmental experts and emergency responders, were deployed to secure the affected areas, coordinate evacuations, and prevent panic. 
Several schools were impacted by the gas exposure, including Our Ladies Grammar School, Anglican Girls Grammar School, Titilayo Agbaje Comprehensive High School, Ifesowapo Comprehensive High School, St. Peter’s Anglican Primary School, and Orphanage Primary School. More than 100 students and teachers reportedly suffered symptoms such as dizziness, stomach pain, breathing difficulties, weakness, and fainting before being rushed to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode and other nearby medical facilities for treatment. Authorities, however, confirmed that no deaths were recorded and victims were responding positively to treatment. 
Preliminary environmental assessments conducted by the Ogun State Government revealed elevated methane gas concentrations in the affected areas, with readings reportedly reaching about 13,500 ppm in some locations. The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, stated that a multi-agency investigation involving environmental regulators, emergency services, and air quality experts had been launched to determine the exact source of the emissions and assess associated health risks. 
The latest incident marks the second major gas leak scare in Ijebu-Ode within two months. In April 2026, more than 30 students and a teacher at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School were hospitalised after inhaling a suspected chemical odour during school hours, prompting renewed concerns over environmental safety in the area.
