Residents of Eziobodo community in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State were thrown into panic on Wednesday night after suspected gunmen reportedly invaded the area, firing gunshots and causing widespread confusion. The community hosts the Federal University of Technology Owerri, raising fears among students and residents living around the area.

Viral videos circulating on social media showed traders, motorists, and residents running for safety as gunshots echoed through the community. One of the videos reportedly showed a commercial motorcyclist with blood stains on his clothes after narrowly escaping the attack. Witnesses said the armed men were sighted around the Okohia forest axis between Ihiagwa and Eziobodo at about 6:30 p.m., triggering fear across the area.

According to community sources, some residents encountered the gunmen while returning home and attempted to flee after noticing the armed group. The attackers allegedly opened fire during the chaos, leaving at least three persons injured, while fears of possible abductions also emerged. However, authorities had yet to officially confirm the number of casualties or identities of the attackers as of the time reports were published.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over insecurity in parts of Imo State, where attacks linked to armed groups and unknown gunmen have persisted in recent years. Residents around the university community reportedly remained indoors overnight as tension spread across the area, while security agencies were expected to intensify patrols and investigations into the attack.
