Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo was reported by his family to have died from complications arising from advanced metastatic kidney cancer, drawing renewed public attention to the disease and its dangers. Metastatic kidney cancer occurs when cancer that begins in the kidneys spreads to other parts of the body such as the lungs, bones, liver, or brain. Medical experts say the condition becomes significantly more difficult to treat once it reaches this stage. 
According to health specialists referenced in the report, kidney cancer often develops silently in its early stages, with many patients showing few or no symptoms initially. Common warning signs may include blood in urine, persistent lower back pain, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, swelling around the ankles, fever, or a lump around the kidney area. Risk factors linked to the disease include smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, family history of kidney cancer, and prolonged exposure to certain chemicals. 
Doctors explain that metastatic kidney cancer is usually diagnosed through imaging scans such as CT scans, MRI, ultrasound, and biopsies. Treatment options depend on how far the disease has spread and may include surgery, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, radiation, or chemotherapy. While treatment can help slow progression and improve quality of life, advanced-stage kidney cancer remains one of the more challenging cancers to cure completely. 
Health experts also stress the importance of regular medical checkups and early diagnosis, noting that kidney cancer detected in its early stages has a far higher survival rate than cases discovered after metastasis. The reports surrounding Ekubo’s death have also sparked conversations about private health battles among celebrities and the need for increased awareness about cancer screening and treatment in Nigeria.
