Nigeria has emerged as the world’s third-largest source of international students, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s newly released Higher Education Global Trends Report. The report revealed that Nigeria accounted for five per cent of global outbound student mobility in 2023, placing the country alongside Germany in third position worldwide. 
UNESCO explained that “outbound student mobility” refers to students leaving their home countries to pursue higher education abroad. According to the report, nearly half of all international students worldwide came from just 10 countries in 2023. China topped the list with 37 per cent, followed by India with 29 per cent, while Nigeria and Germany each contributed five per cent. Viet Nam, Uzbekistan, the United States, France, Pakistan, and Nepal each accounted for four per cent.

UNESCO noted that international student mobility has grown significantly over the past two decades, with the number of students studying abroad rising from 2.5 million in 2002 to 7.3 million in 2023. The organisation projects that figure could increase to nine million by 2030. Despite the rapid growth, UNESCO stressed that fewer than three per cent of higher education students globally are able to access international education opportunities, describing overseas study as still largely limited to a privileged minority. 
The report attributed rising student migration trends to factors such as economic conditions, visa policies, scholarship opportunities, post-graduation work prospects, and the perceived quality of local university systems. Many Nigerian students reportedly continue to favour destinations such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Australia in pursuit of better academic and career opportunities abroad.
