Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has received a major political boost after the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria. The decision was adopted during the party’s national convention in Abuja and is widely seen as strengthening Obi’s chances of emerging as the party’s presidential flagbearer ahead of the next general election.

Party delegates reportedly approved the zoning arrangement after a motion moved by lawmaker Afam Victor Ogene, with the NDC also agreeing that the South should produce the party’s presidential candidate for a single four-year term before power rotates back to the North in 2031. The resolution comes days after Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso officially defected from the ADC to the NDC amid ongoing opposition realignments.

The development has intensified speculation that Obi may eventually clinch the NDC ticket, especially following the collapse of coalition talks within the ADC and the growing influence of his supporters inside the new party. Political observers believe the zoning arrangement was designed to preserve regional balance while also positioning the opposition for a stronger challenge against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Thousands of supporters and party delegates attended the convention in Abuja, causing heavy traffic congestion around the venue as security operatives struggled to manage the crowd. The event further highlighted the rising profile of the NDC as opposition figures continue migrating into the party ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential race.
