A disagreement over a small sum of money has turned deadly in Ilare, Osun State, after a man identified as Bukunmi died following a violent clash during a masquerade (Egungun) festival procession. The incident reportedly occurred on Friday evening after participants in the celebration attempted to share ₦8,000 they had collectively earned from the festival.

Eyewitnesses said the deceased, along with two others identified as Femi and Pelumi, were part of a small group that collected money from spectators during the procession. Tension reportedly began when a disagreement broke out during the sharing of the ₦8,000, leading to an argument that quickly escalated into a physical confrontation.

During the altercation, Bukunmi allegedly struck Femi while he was trying to mediate, after which Femi reportedly stabbed him with a knife in the heat of the moment. The injured man was rushed to a hospital, but he was later confirmed dead from his injuries, while the suspect was arrested by security operatives and handed over to the police.

The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect is in custody and the deceased’s body has been deposited in the morgue for autopsy. Authorities added that a full investigation is ongoing to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal clash.
