Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised elderly Nigerians, especially octogenarians, to adopt healthier lifestyles if they hope to live beyond the age of 90. Obasanjo gave the advice during activities marking the 80th birthday celebration of prominent businessman and Asiwaju Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta states, Alhaji Olatunde Badmus, in Osogbo, Osun State.
Speaking at the event through Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, Obasanjo said older people must prioritise adequate rest, moderate eating habits, and regular exercise to remain healthy at advanced ages. He specifically advised octogenarians to sleep for at least eight hours daily, avoid excessive stress, and maintain discipline in their lifestyles.
The former president stressed that longevity is not determined only by medicine but also by personal habits and emotional wellbeing. According to him, maintaining peace of mind, avoiding unnecessary worries, and staying physically active are essential factors that can help elderly people remain strong and mentally alert even in old age.
Obasanjo, who recently turned 89, has frequently spoken about healthy living, agriculture, and active ageing during public appearances. His latest remarks come amid ongoing discussions in Nigeria about life expectancy, elderly care, and the importance of healthier lifestyles among ageing citizens.
