The Senate has passed the 2026 Statutory Appropriation Bill for the Federal Capital Territory, approving a total budget of ₦2.285 trillion aimed at accelerating infrastructure development and public service delivery across Abuja and surrounding satellite towns. The approval followed the consideration of a harmonised report by joint Senate and House of Representatives committees on the FCT during Thursday’s plenary session. 
Presenting the report, Senator Austin Akobundu disclosed that the budget allocates ₦165.7 billion for personnel costs, ₦378.2 billion for overheads, and a massive ₦1.741 trillion for capital expenditure. Lawmakers noted that the spending framework strongly prioritises infrastructure and development projects, with about 76.19 per cent of the total budget dedicated to capital projects, while recurrent expenditure accounts for roughly 23.8 per cent. 
Senators who contributed during deliberations praised the structure of the budget, describing it as development-focused and responsive to Abuja’s rapidly expanding population and infrastructure demands. Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau commended the heavy capital allocation, saying it reflects the Federal Capital Territory Administration’s commitment to transforming Abuja through major investments in roads, transportation, healthcare, education, and public utilities. 
The appropriation bill now awaits presidential assent after passing third reading in the Senate. The development comes amid increasing pressure on the FCT Administration to improve infrastructure and basic services as population growth continues to stretch facilities in Abuja and nearby communities.
