Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will consult widely before deciding whether to contest the 2027 presidential election, following mounting calls from youth groups urging him to return to active politics. Jonathan made the remark on Thursday while receiving supporters under the banner of the “Coalition for Goodluck Jonathan” at his Abuja office. 
Responding to the appeals, Jonathan stated that “presidential race is not a computer game,” stressing that leadership decisions require careful reflection and broad consultation. While he stopped short of officially declaring his intention to run, his comments have further intensified speculation about a possible political comeback ahead of the next general election. 
The former president also urged Nigerian youths to become more actively involved in democratic processes and continue advocating for peaceful and credible elections. He warned that weak electoral systems and political instability discourage competent citizens from participating in governance, adding that patriotism and civic engagement remain essential for national development. 
Jonathan’s statement comes amid ongoing political realignments and uncertainty within opposition parties ahead of 2027. Recent defections and coalition collapses among major opposition figures have fuelled renewed calls for consensus candidates capable of challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next election cycle.
