Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved the commencement of a feasibility study for a proposed seaport project, signaling a major step toward developing maritime infrastructure in the state. The move is part of broader efforts to position Abia as a regional trade hub and unlock new economic opportunities for the South-East.
The proposed seaport—often linked to locations such as Azumiri or Ukwa axis—has been under consideration for some time, with earlier discussions already indicating that feasibility assessments were nearing completion before the latest approval to advance the process.  The study is expected to evaluate technical, environmental, and financial viability, which will determine whether the project can proceed to full development.
Government officials say the initiative aligns with ongoing infrastructure expansion in the state, including projects like the Abia airport and inland dry port, all aimed at boosting logistics, trade, and industrial growth. Analysts note that if successful, the seaport could reduce dependence on congested ports in other regions and create new export routes for businesses in Aba and surrounding commercial centres.
The feasibility phase is seen as a critical foundation, as Governor Otti has previously stressed the importance of ensuring adequate funding and sustainability before construction begins. With this approval, the project moves closer to implementation, though final execution will depend on the study’s outcome and potential partnerships with investors.
