No fewer than 16 members of Nigeria’s House of Representatives have defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), deepening the ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. The mass movement was formally announced during plenary by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. 
The lawmakers cited “unresolved crises” within the ADC as the main reason for their exit, pointing to internal disagreements and instability that have plagued the party in recent months. Among those who defected are Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Thaddeus Attah, Lilian Orogbu, and several others, marking one of the largest bloc defections in the current legislative session. 
The development is part of a broader wave of political shifts affecting the opposition, especially following the recent defection of high-profile figures like Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to the NDC. Analysts say the latest move by lawmakers reflects growing concerns about party cohesion and internal conflicts within the ADC, which continue to drive members toward alternative platforms. 
With defections now spreading across both leadership ranks and legislative members, the situation underscores a rapidly changing political landscape, as parties reposition and consolidate strength in preparation for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election cycle.
