A defendant in the ongoing alleged coup trial has denied any involvement in plans to overthrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government, insisting in a video statement presented in court that he was misled by other suspects. The accused, identified as Zekeri Umoru, made the claim during proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where six individuals are facing trial over the alleged plot. 
Umoru, who works in the maintenance department of the Presidential Villa through a construction firm, told investigators that he was introduced to key figures in the case under the impression of legitimate business dealings. He said he initially believed one of the central figures was a civilian contractor offering electrical jobs, only later discovering links to military personnel. 
In the video played in court, he admitted receiving multiple cash payments—running into millions of naira—but claimed he became suspicious and sought clarification. According to him, he was later told vague plans about “sanitising the government,” but maintained he had no knowledge of any coup attempt and would have withdrawn had he known the true intent. 
Despite the prosecution presenting the footage as part of its evidence, Umoru repeatedly denied wrongdoing, expressed regret, and apologised, while affirming support for the current administration. The trial continues as the court reviews more video evidence and testimonies linked to the alleged conspiracy.
