Founder of Zenith Bank Plc, Jim Ovia, has officially retired as the bank’s Group Chairman, bringing an end to a defining chapter in Nigeria’s banking sector. The announcement was made during the bank’s 35th Annual General Meeting, confirming that his exit follows the expiration of his tenure.
Ovia stepped down after completing the maximum 12-year tenure allowed under corporate governance guidelines for financial institutions in Nigeria. Having previously served as the bank’s founder and CEO from 1990 to 2010, he returned as chairman in 2014 and has since played a central role in shaping the institution’s strategy, governance, and expansion.
The bank’s board praised his tenure, crediting him with strong leadership, strategic direction, and effective oversight that helped transform Zenith Bank into one of Nigeria’s leading financial institutions. His retirement marks a significant leadership transition for the bank, given his longstanding influence on its growth and reputation.
Following his exit, the board has appointed Mustafa Bello as the new Group Chairman, signaling a new phase for the institution as it continues its operations within Nigeria and across international markets.
