\n\nSenate President Godswill Akpabio has described the African Democratic Congress as “dead” following a fresh wave of defections by lawmakers at the National Assembly. His remark came during plenary on Tuesday as multiple senators formally announced their exit from the party. 
Among those who left the ADC were lawmakers who moved to other parties such as the Nigeria Democratic Congress and the Labour Party. Notably, Senator Victor Umeh defected to the NDC, citing internal crises and persistent legal disputes within the ADC as key reasons for his decision. 
Reacting during the session, Akpabio made the comment partly in a humorous tone, suggesting that the frequency of defections had become excessive. He joked that lawmakers should compile their defections together instead of announcing them repeatedly, adding that the situation reflects the party’s declining stability. 
The development highlights the deepening crisis within the ADC, as ongoing internal conflicts and high-profile exits continue to weaken the party’s standing ahead of the 2027 general elections, with analysts warning that sustained defections could significantly reshape Nigeria’s political landscape.
