The Social Democratic Party in Anambra State has revealed plans to formally receive no fewer than 23 aspirants defecting from the African Democratic Congress, as political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections intensify. The state chairman, Prince Chinedu Ekwunife, disclosed this shortly after the party’s congress in Awka, noting that the defectors include aspirants for both National and State Assembly positions. 
Ekwunife attributed the wave of defections to the ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, which has left many aspirants uncertain about contesting under the party’s platform. He added that the situation has been worsened by recent high-profile exits, including that of Peter Obi, which has further destabilised confidence among party members. 
The SDP chairman said the party is using the momentum to strengthen its grassroots structure, claiming it now has functional leadership across all 326 wards in Anambra’s 21 local government areas. He emphasised that the party is positioning itself as a credible alternative ahead of 2027, with ongoing efforts to expand its reach and consolidate new entrants into its political base.
