Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for public sector workers in the state as part of measures to ease economic hardship. The announcement was made during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration in Lagos, where the governor—represented by his deputy—acknowledged the financial strain facing workers. 
The wage support, which applies for the month of May, will be paid across board to all categories of workers, regardless of grade level. Officials said the decision was influenced by rising fuel prices, inflation, and broader global economic pressures, with the government aiming to provide immediate relief to its workforce. 
Authorities also praised Lagos workers for their role in sustaining the state’s economy, describing them as the backbone of its development. The move is part of a wider pattern of welfare interventions by the state government, though officials indicated the wage award may be reviewed depending on future economic conditions.
