President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the removal of Saidu Mohammed as the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, appointing Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as his replacement, subject to Senate confirmation. The decision was announced in a State House statement, which described the move as being made in the public interest. 
According to the Presidency, the leadership change is aimed at strengthening regulatory efficiency in Nigeria’s midstream and downstream petroleum sector, in line with the Petroleum Industry Act and the administration’s reform agenda. The NMDPRA plays a critical role in overseeing fuel supply, pricing, and operations in the downstream oil industry—making the position highly strategic for the country’s energy stability. 
Umar, who has over 25 years of experience across energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure, is expected to bring technical and managerial expertise to the role if confirmed. His nomination comes amid ongoing adjustments in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, with authorities seeking stronger oversight and improved performance in a period marked by fluctuating fuel prices and reforms in the industry.
