The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s International Workers’ Day. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Interior on behalf of the government, extending congratulations to workers across the country for their contributions to national development. 
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, praised Nigerian workers for their dedication, hard work, and role in driving the nation’s growth. He emphasized that workers remain central to economic progress and urged them to continue upholding values such as productivity, patriotism, and commitment to duty. 
The declaration aligns with global observance of International Workers’ Day, celebrated annually on May 1 to honour the achievements and rights of workers. In Nigeria, the day is recognized as a national public holiday, providing an opportunity to reflect on labour welfare and the importance of improving working conditions across sectors.
