A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to recognise or participate in any congresses organised by a disputed caretaker leadership of the African Democratic Congress, escalating the party’s ongoing internal crisis. The ruling, delivered by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, specifically targets congresses linked to a faction within the party leadership. 
The court also restrained former Senate President David Mark and other figures associated with the caretaker structure from interfering with the functions and tenure of duly elected state executives. It held that the responsibility for organising state congresses lies with recognised party structures, not interim committees set up outside constitutional provisions. 
The case, filed by party stakeholders challenging the legality of the caretaker leadership, highlights the deep divisions within the ADC as it prepares for the 2027 elections. Analysts say the ruling could significantly affect the party’s ability to organise primaries and present candidates, especially as multiple legal battles—including a pending Supreme Court decision—continue to shape its leadership structure.
