Power Struggle Looms in Abia APC as Kalu, Deputy Speaker Claim Tinubu’s Backing

A fresh leadership tussle has emerged within the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as both Orji Uzor Kalu and Benjamin Okezie Kalu claim they were directed by Bola Ahmed Tinubu to oversee party affairs in the state ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Deputy Speaker explained that the President’s directive follows a structure where governors manage party affairs in APC-controlled states, while the highest-ranking political office holder takes charge in states where the party is not in power, such as Abia. He expressed confidence that this approach has strengthened party unity and positioned the APC for electoral success in the state.

However, Orji Kalu also publicly stated that he had been given a “marching order” to coordinate party activities in Abia, pledging to work with stakeholders to ensure credible primaries and strengthen the party’s chances. The overlapping claims have fueled speculation of an emerging internal power struggle, highlighting tensions within the APC as it prepares for the 2027 political contest in a state currently governed by the opposition.
