Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has cautioned against proposals to suspend political campaigns in parts of Northern Nigeria affected by insecurity, warning that such a move could undermine democracy. 
His reaction follows reports that the National Assembly is considering halting political activities in states like Borno, Benue, and Plateau due to escalating violence and insurgent attacks. 
Atiku argued that suspending campaigns would violate constitutional rights, particularly the right to political participation, and could create fears of disenfranchisement among voters in affected regions. He stressed that insecurity should not be used as a basis to restrict democratic processes, but rather addressed through stronger security measures. 
He also warned that such a decision might set a dangerous precedent, where insecurity becomes a tool to limit political engagement, potentially weakening Nigeria’s democratic system. Instead, he urged authorities to focus on improving security conditions so that elections and campaigns can proceed safely. 
The debate comes amid worsening security concerns in parts of Northern Nigeria, where lawmakers have expressed fears over renewed attacks by insurgents and bandits, prompting calls for emergency measures. 
In essence, Atiku’s position is clear: fix the insecurity—not the democracy.
