\n\nThe Nigeria Police Force has successfully foiled a coordinated bandit attack in Sokoto State, preventing what could have been a major assault on rural communities. The operation was carried out by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the state command following a distress call about simultaneous attacks on Illela village in Achida town and parts of Kwargaba district.
According to police authorities, officers responded swiftly and engaged the heavily armed attackers in a fierce gun battle. The operatives were able to repel the assault, restoring calm to the affected areas. During the confrontation, one of the gunmen—reportedly dressed in military camouflage—was killed, raising concerns about criminals disguising themselves as security personnel to deceive residents.
The police added that several other attackers escaped with gunshot wounds into the nearby Gundumi Forest, a known hideout for criminal groups. A manhunt is currently underway to track down the fleeing suspects, with security operatives combing surrounding areas to prevent further attacks.
Despite the success of the operation, the incident recorded a tragic loss, as a local vigilante member was killed by the bandits before security forces arrived. Authorities confirmed that his remains have been recovered and handed over to his family.
The Sokoto State Police Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, urging residents to remain vigilant and provide timely intelligence, as community cooperation remains critical in tackling banditry across the region.
