The All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially rescheduled its presidential primary election to May 23, 2026, as part of adjustments to its timetable ahead of the 2027 general elections. The change affects earlier timelines and aligns the party’s internal processes with electoral requirements. 
Under the revised schedule, the party also fixed May 21, 2026, for its governorship primaries, while other pre-primary activities such as screening and appeals have been adjusted accordingly. The shift is seen as part of broader efforts to ensure smoother coordination of party activities and compliance with regulations set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). 
A major highlight of the update is the APC’s adoption of a dual mode of primary elections, allowing aspirants to emerge through either consensus or direct primaries. Party officials explained that consensus would be encouraged where possible to promote unity, but if it fails, the process will automatically revert to direct voting by party members. 
The decision reflects ongoing internal strategy within the APC to balance inclusiveness with party cohesion, especially as political activities intensify ahead of 2027. Analysts say the dual approach could help reduce internal conflicts while still maintaining democratic participation within the party.
