Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, has died at the age of 50 after a prolonged illness, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed. He reportedly passed away in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye. 
The late diplomat was a career foreign service officer who, until his death, served as Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the ministry. He had recently been appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as ambassador-designate to Algeria, following confirmation by the Senate, but died before assuming the role. 
Born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University, Kano, and had a distinguished diplomatic career with postings in Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh. The ministry described him as a dedicated and accomplished officer known for his intellectual depth and commitment to Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives. 
His remains were received in Abuja by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being transported for burial in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites. The government noted that his passing is a significant loss to Nigeria’s diplomatic community and the nation at large, extending condolences to his family and associates.
