The Lagos State Government has released detailed guidelines for the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise, scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 25, 2026. According to the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the exercise will take place every last Saturday of the month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., with controlled movement across the state during that period. 
Residents are expected to use the two-hour window to clean their homes, surroundings, and drainage systems, while enforcement teams will monitor compliance. These teams will include officials from the ministry, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and local government inspectors. Authorities also stated that physical inspections will be conducted during and after the exercise. 
The government warned that anyone who fails to comply will face penalties under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. At the same time, LAWMA trucks will be deployed to evacuate properly bagged waste generated during the sanitation period, ensuring efficient waste disposal. 
To encourage participation, the state introduced incentives, including rewards for the cleanest local government, council development area, and street. Officials say the initiative is part of a broader effort to improve environmental hygiene, reduce flooding, and restore a sanitation culture that had been suspended since 2016.
