Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from his position after securing approval from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State. The planned resignation follows a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where Adelabu briefed the president on his performance in the power sector. 
According to a statement from his media aide, the minister is expected to step down in the coming days to fully focus on the 2027 gubernatorial race. The move aligns with directives requiring political appointees seeking elective office to resign before contesting. 
During his meeting with the president, Adelabu reportedly highlighted achievements recorded under his leadership, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, improve transmission capacity, and implement key reforms in the power sector. His planned exit, however, is being timed to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms before he leaves office. 
President Tinubu was said to have commended Adelabu’s work and granted his consent for the political move, effectively clearing the way for his entry into the Oyo governorship race under the All Progressives Congress. 
The development signals early political positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, with Adelabu—who previously contested the Oyo governorship—now preparing for another attempt at the state’s top office.
