The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government, threatening to embark on a nationwide strike if ongoing renegotiation talks are not concluded before the end of April 2026. The union expressed frustration over what it described as the slow and inconclusive pace of discussions regarding the review of its 2009 agreement with the government. 
SSANU gave the government a final ultimatum from April 1 to April 30, 2026, insisting that the renegotiation process must be completed and formally signed within that period. The union warned that failure to meet the deadline would leave it with no option but to begin an indefinite and total industrial action, in collaboration with its Joint Action Committee partner. 
Beyond the stalled negotiations, the union also raised concerns about persistent salary delays, unpaid allowances, and withheld entitlements, which it said have caused severe hardship for university workers and reduced morale across the system. It further criticised the government’s handling of previously approved funds and called for a more reliable salary payment structure. 
SSANU stressed that it has shown patience despite worsening economic conditions and rising living costs but warned that continued neglect of university workers’ welfare can no longer be tolerated. With the deadline approaching, the union maintained that it is fully prepared to take decisive action if its demands are not met, raising fears of another major disruption in Nigeria’s university system.
