The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has warned broadcast stations across Nigeria to adhere strictly to professional standards or face sanctions, citing a growing decline in the quality of news, current affairs, and political programming. In a statement, the commission said it has observed a steady rise in ethical breaches that undermine the responsibility of broadcasters to deliver accurate, balanced, and professional information to the public. 
The NBC expressed particular concern over the conduct of programme anchors and presenters, noting that some now inject personal opinions into discussions, fail to provide equal representation for opposing views, and allow biased or one-sided narratives. It described this trend as a “crisis” in professionalism, warning that such actions violate the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which mandates fairness, accuracy, and neutrality in all broadcasts. 
The commission also criticised the increasing misuse of broadcast platforms by political actors, who it said exploit radio and television programmes to spread inflammatory, divisive, or inciting content. It raised alarm over the rise in hate speech and rhetoric capable of threatening national unity, especially as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. 
As part of its enforcement stance, the NBC stated that any presenter found expressing opinions as facts, intimidating guests, or denying fair hearing to opposing views would be committing a breach punishable under the code. It stressed that broadcasters are fully responsible for all content aired on their platforms even during live programmes and warned that strict compliance is now mandatory, with sanctions to be applied where violations occur.
