Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has suspended plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after negotiations between his camp and the ruling party collapsed over disagreements on power-sharing arrangements. Talks between both sides had been ongoing for weeks as part of broader political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, but failed to produce a final agreement. 
At the centre of the dispute was a proposed 60–40 power-sharing formula, which would have allowed the governor’s political structure to control a majority stake in the party’s leadership in the state. However, APC stakeholders rejected the arrangement, arguing that it was not acceptable under the circumstances. Officials from the Bauchi PDP confirmed that the condition was part of the negotiations but was ultimately declined, leading to a breakdown in talks. 
Party leaders explained that such arrangements are sometimes used in political defections to accommodate incoming structures, especially when a sitting governor is involved. However, in this case, APC members in Bauchi reportedly resisted the proposal due to concerns about internal balance, party control, and the interests of existing members. 
Following the deadlock, the Bauchi PDP leadership announced that discussions with the APC have been formally discontinued. They added that the governor and his allies are now considering other political options, including potential alignment with alternative parties, as consultations continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
