Telecommunications company Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data borrowing services for prepaid subscribers. The affected services previously allowed users to borrow airtime or data and repay on their next recharge, a feature widely relied upon by millions of Nigerians for emergency communication needs.

The company explained that the decision is part of ongoing efforts to align its operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements within Nigeria’s telecom and digital lending space. Officials described the move as a “necessary and responsible step,” emphasizing that compliance, transparency, and consumer protection remain top priorities as the industry adapts to new rules.

Despite the suspension, Airtel reassured customers that normal services remain unaffected, noting that users can still purchase airtime and data through existing channels without disruption. The company also stated that the temporary halt will not impact overall network performance or service quality, while promising to provide updates once the borrowing services are restored.

The development comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny of digital lending services in Nigeria, following new frameworks introduced by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. These rules now classify airtime and data advances as forms of digital credit, requiring telecom operators to meet stricter compliance and licensing conditions before continuing such offerings.
