MTN Nigeria has temporarily suspended its popular airtime and data borrowing services, including Xtratime, following the introduction of new lending regulations by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). The telecom giant announced the decision in a corporate filing, explaining that the move is necessary to comply with the commission’s updated framework governing digital and non-traditional lending services.

The affected services allow prepaid subscribers to borrow airtime or data and repay on their next recharge, a feature widely used by millions of Nigerians as a quick emergency credit option. However, under the FCCPC’s 2025 regulations, such services are now classified as digital lending products, meaning providers must meet stricter requirements, including registration, licensing, and compliance with consumer protection standards. MTN stated that the suspension is temporary and will remain in place while it aligns its operations with the new rules.

The new regulations are part of broader efforts by the FCCPC to strengthen oversight of Nigeria’s fast-growing digital lending space, particularly around issues such as consumer protection, data privacy, and debt recovery practices. By extending these rules to telecom operators, the commission aims to ensure that all forms of short-term credit—whether from banks, fintech firms, or telcos—are properly regulated.

Despite the suspension, MTN reassured customers that regular airtime and data purchase options remain unaffected. The company also noted that the halt in lending services is not expected to significantly impact its overall revenue, as it works toward meeting the regulatory requirements and potentially restoring the service once compliance is achieved.
