\n\nNigeria is set to sign a landmark $25 billion intergovernmental agreement with Morocco for the development of the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, a massive transcontinental energy project aimed at boosting regional integration and expanding gas exports. The deal marks a major step forward in one of Africa’s most ambitious infrastructure initiatives, designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria across multiple West African countries to North Africa and eventually into Europe. The agreement is expected to formalize cooperation between both countries and advance the project into its next implementation phase.
The proposed pipeline will stretch thousands of kilometres along the Atlantic coast, passing through at least 13 West African nations and serving an estimated 400 million people. It is designed to transport between 15 and 30 billion cubic metres of gas annually, creating a new energy corridor that will supply gas to participating countries while also connecting to existing infrastructure that feeds European markets.  This positions the project as a strategic response to global energy demand and a potential alternative supply route amid shifting international energy dynamics.
Officials say the project will not only enhance energy security across the region but also drive industrialisation, job creation, and economic growth in participating countries. The pipeline is expected to unlock Nigeria’s vast gas reserves while strengthening trade links between West and North Africa. Analysts also note that the initiative represents a broader push for continental cooperation, as multiple countries and financial institutions are involved in funding and executing the project, which has already progressed through feasibility and planning stages.
Beyond its economic impact, the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline is seen as a transformative project for Africa’s energy landscape, reinforcing the continent’s role in global gas supply chains. With increasing demand for cleaner energy sources, the pipeline is expected to support long-term development goals while positioning both Nigeria and Morocco as key players in international energy markets.
