Former senator Iyabo Obasanjo has announced the suspension of her bid for the Ogun State governorship race ahead of the 2027 elections, following the emergence of Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus candidate. The decision was made public in a statement she personally signed, marking a significant shift in the political dynamics within the party in Ogun State. 
According to Obasanjo, her withdrawal came after the party’s caucus meeting held in Abeokuta, where Adeola was adopted as the preferred candidate. She acknowledged the outcome of the process and expressed her support for the party’s decision, stating that she was grateful for the opportunity to participate in the nomination exercise. She also extended her congratulations to Adeola, wishing him success as he prepares for the upcoming election. 
The former lawmaker further appreciated her supporters across the state for their loyalty and commitment throughout her campaign. She urged them to remain calm and optimistic, emphasizing unity and continued engagement within the party despite her decision to step aside. Political observers say the development reinforces the APC’s move toward a consensus strategy in Ogun, aimed at avoiding internal divisions and strengthening its chances ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
