Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has defended the Nigerian military following a controversial airstrike in Jilli village that reportedly led to civilian casualties. The incident, which occurred on April 11, 2026, targeted an area believed to be a stronghold for insurgents along the border between Borno and Yobe states. Initial reports indicated that several people, including traders, may have been killed when the strike hit what was described as a weekly market. 
Reacting to the development, Zulum stated that the Jilli market had actually been shut down by the state government about five years ago due to its alleged use by insurgents and their logistics networks. He described the location as a notorious hub for terrorist activities, stressing that authorities had long prohibited trading activities there. The governor also revealed that his administration works closely with security agencies before reopening any market or resettling communities affected by insurgency. 
Meanwhile, the military maintained that the airstrike was part of an intelligence-led operation under Operation Hadin Kai, aimed at disrupting terrorist movements and logistics in the region. Surveillance reportedly detected suspicious movements consistent with insurgent activity before the strike was carried out. However, concerns have been raised following reports of civilian casualties, with emergency agencies in neighboring Yobe State confirming that the incident affected traders and prompting an immediate response to assist victims and assess the situation
