Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has reacted to the United States’ recent decision to authorise the evacuation of non-essential embassy staff and dependents from Nigeria, describing it as a worrying sign of declining international confidence in the country’s security situation.
Obi said the development reflects how seriously Nigeria’s security challenges are being perceived globally, warning that it could have broader implications for diplomacy, investment, and national reputation. He argued that when foreign governments begin withdrawing personnel, it sends a message that urgent domestic reforms are needed to restore stability and trust.
The U.S. decision follows its updated travel advisory, which cited heightened security risks, including terrorism, kidnapping, and violent crime in parts of Nigeria, and allowed voluntary departure of certain diplomatic staff from Abuja.  Obi urged Nigerian leaders to treat the development as a “wake-up call,” stressing that restoring security must be a top national priority to avoid further erosion of international confidence.
