The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has cautioned courts and lawyers against вмешיח in the internal affairs of political parties, warning that such actions could undermine Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 elections. 
In a statement signed by its president, Afam Osigwe, the NBA expressed concern over a growing trend where legal actions are being used to drag courts into intra-party disputes. The association pointed to provisions in the Electoral Act 2022, particularly Section 83, which restrict courts from entertaining cases relating to internal party matters and bars interim injunctions in such disputes. 
The NBA criticised what it described as “forum shopping” and bad-faith litigation, accusing some lawyers of seeking favourable rulings to influence political outcomes. It warned that such practices could turn the judiciary into a tool for political manipulation, rather than justice. The body also threatened disciplinary action against lawyers who violate these rules and urged courts to exercise restraint and reject cases they are legally barred from hearing. 
Additionally, the association called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to sanction judges who assume jurisdiction in prohibited matters, while urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain neutral in political disputes. Overall, the NBA stressed that respecting legal boundaries is essential to protect the integrity of both the judiciary and Nigeria’s democratic system.
