Viral ₦5,000 Note Featuring Tinubu Is Fake — CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed as false a viral image circulating online that claims to show a newly introduced ₦5,000 banknote featuring President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The apex bank made it clear that the content is fake and not from any official source.

According to the CBN, the image gained traction on social media, with users suggesting it was a preview of a new currency design. However, the bank debunked the claim on its official platform, stating plainly: “This content is fake. Let the public be guided.”

This is not the first time such rumours have surfaced. Similar claims about the introduction of ₦5,000 or ₦10,000 notes have previously been fact-checked and proven false, with some of the images traced to AI-generated or manipulated content.

Overall, the CBN has urged Nigerians to rely only on official announcements and disregard viral posts about new currency designs, as no such ₦5,000 note currently exists or has been approved.
