The Federal Government has condemned the growing practice of crowning “Eze Ndigbo” (Igbo traditional rulers) in foreign countries, describing it as embarrassing and potentially dangerous for Nigeria’s image and diplomatic relations. The warning was issued by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who said the trend is causing concern at both national and international levels. 
According to the government, while Igbo communities in the diaspora are free to promote their culture, establishing traditional rulership structures abroad has led to conflicts—both within Nigerian communities and with host countries. In some cases, such coronations have triggered protests and even violence, as seen in South Africa, where authorities reportedly declared such an installation illegal and local groups opposed it. 
The government warned that the practice could create diplomatic tensions and misunderstandings, as it may be seen as challenging the authority or traditions of host nations. To address this, the FG is working with Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and the South-East Council of Traditional Rulers to abolish the practice outside Igboland. The groups have also moved to ban recognition of “Eze Ndigbo” titles in the diaspora, stressing that anyone adopting such titles abroad does so without legitimacy. 
Overall, authorities are urging diaspora communities to promote culture without creating parallel traditional institutions, warning that failure to do so could harm Nigerians abroad and strain international relations.
