Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that both terrorists and military personnel were killed during a coordinated attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State. The assault targeted the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in the early hours of April 9, 2026. 
According to a statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the insurgents attempted to breach the base around 12:30 a.m., but troops of Operation HADIN KAI responded with strong resistance. The military said its personnel displayed “exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower,” successfully repelling the attackers and forcing them to retreat. 
While confirming casualties on both sides, the DHQ did not officially verify reports that the brigade commander, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, was among those killed. The military described the нападение as a sign of desperation by insurgents who have suffered heavy losses in recent operations, emphasizing that such attacks are “futile and ill-fated” attempts against fortified positions. 
The incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, where insurgent groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP continue to target military formations despite intensified counter-terrorism efforts.
