Senate President Godswill Akpabio has explained why he stood in for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the commissioning of projects executed by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to Akpabio, the main reason was the demands of the president’s office, which make it impossible for Tinubu to attend every public engagement. He noted that as president, Tinubu now serves the entire nation and even the global community, meaning his schedule is often too tight for all events. 
Akpabio also justified his role by pointing to his strong personal connection to Lagos, stating that he has lived and worked in the state for decades and is familiar with its development. He argued that, as Senate President and someone who understands Lagos well, he was in a good position to represent the president and communicate the importance of the projects to Nigerians. 
The projects commissioned included major infrastructure like the Opebi–Ojota Link Bridge and an e-GIS complex, which are part of efforts to improve transportation, urban planning, and service delivery in Lagos. Akpabio emphasized that representing the president at such events ensures that the message of development and progress still reaches the public, even in Tinubu’s absence.
