A US-based Nigerian academic, Offiong Aqua, has criticised Umo Eno over a controversial remark in which the governor asked citizens, “Am I your receptionist?” The comment, made during a church event, sparked backlash after it went viral, with many interpreting it as dismissive of public concerns, particularly around governance issues like the oil wells dispute with Cross River State. 
Reacting to the incident, Aqua described the governor’s statement as inappropriate, stressing that public officials must remain accountable and open to citizens. He argued that elected leaders are public servants funded by taxpayers and should expect engagement from the people, noting that frustration among citizens often stems from economic hardship and governance challenges. He added that leaders should respond to criticism with transparency rather than dismissive language. 
The critic further warned that such remarks could erode public trust, insisting that governance should be rooted in accountability and respect. He urged the Akwa Ibom government to focus on publishing clear records of performance and addressing citizens’ concerns, emphasizing that openness and responsiveness are key to strengthening democracy and maintaining confidence in leadership.
