The Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently probe recent threats and intimidation directed at journalist Seun Okinbaloye and other media practitioners in Nigeria. The rights group expressed concern that such actions undermine press freedom and could deter critical reporting in a democratic society.
SERAP’s appeal followed reports that some journalists have faced harassment, online abuse, and direct threats in connection with their coverage of political events and governance issues. The organisation argued that such environments create a chilling effect, discouraging journalists from performing their constitutional role without fear or favour.
In its letter to the presidency, SERAP emphasised that media freedom is central to democratic governance and urged the government to ensure adequate protection for journalists. It also called for transparent investigations and accountability for anyone found responsible for threatening or intimidating members of the press, warning that failure to act could erode public trust and Nigeria’s democratic credentials.
