The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of orchestrating a move that could prevent the party from fielding candidates in the 2027 general elections, deepening its ongoing political crisis. According to ADC officials, the directive by INEC to stop accepting the party’s official documentation arising from a leadership dispute could disqualify it from meeting electoral deadlines and submitting candidate lists.
The party described the development as a “concerted attempt” to neutralise its participation in the upcoming elections, warning that non‑receipt of its correspondence could be used to declare it non‑compliant with electoral requirements. ADC leaders reiterated that the directive places them at a disadvantage, particularly as the May 10 nomination deadline looms, and urged INEC to reverse the position to preserve democratic competition.
Political analysts say the dispute highlights broader tensions between parties and the electoral commission as Nigeria edges closer to the 2027 polls, with opposition groups emphasising the importance of a level playing field.
