Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has launched a strong attack on former presidential candidate Peter Obi, following controversial remarks Obi made about Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle and the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO). The criticism comes after Obi suggested that some present-day political actors who once fought for democracy now appear worse than past military rulers, a statement that sparked widespread backlash. 
Reacting via social media, Fani-Kayode described Obi’s comments as deeply offensive, accusing him of trivialising the sacrifices of NADECO members who fought against military dictatorship. He stressed that many activists suffered imprisonment, exile, and even death during the June 12 struggle, insisting that such history should not be diminished or rewritten for political arguments. 
In a particularly harsh remark, Fani-Kayode declared that Obi would “never become President,” arguing that his comments had damaged his credibility and disrespected those who paid the price for Nigeria’s democracy. The exchange has further intensified political tensions and debates over Nigeria’s democratic history, especially as the country gradually moves toward the 2027 general elections.
